Cong snub to Jagan Mohan Reddy

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

New Delhi, Jul 6 (PTI) Congress today virtually snubbed Andhra Pradesh MP Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy for his decision to go ahead with his controversial yatra, saying party discipline must be observed. "All true committed and loyal Congressmen must necessarily observe both the party dharma and Laxman rekha of propriety and party discipline," party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said. Reddy, the son of late Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YSR Reddy, has decided to resume his controversial "Odarpu" yatra from July 8 despite party chief Sonia Gandhi''s reservations about it. In an indication of the party toughening its stand on the issue, Singhvi said, "Failure to do so would perforce lead to a chain of consequences, which are best avoidable. We hope and trust that compliance will take the place of defiance." The Congress spokesperson maintained that "party discipline like law does not discriminate between individuals." Jagan, who had defied the party directive against undertaking the yatra in May also, had met Gandhi along with his family members on June 29 to seek her permission for the tour. The meeting took place in New Delhi on the request of Jagans mother Vijayalakshmi. During the meeting, the Congress chief had suggested assembling the affected families at one place to console them and also to offer financial assistance, the young Lok Sabha MP said. In an open letter to the people, he said, "We explained to her the need to resume the yatra to console the family members of those who died following the death of my father. She (Sonia Gandhi) did not cite any specific reason but did not appear to be favourably inclined over resuming the yatra." Jagan would pay tributes to his father at Idupulapaya, the family estate where he was buried, today and later proceed to Ichapuram in Srikakulam district to resume his tour. Defying the Congress high command''s directive earlier, Jagan had left by train to start his yatra in Warangal district on May 28 but it was marred by violent protests from Telangana supporters.

Nikkei rebounds from 7-mth low as China gains soothe

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Japan's Nikkei rebounded from a seven-month low on Tuesday, rising 0.8 percent to close above a key retracement level as a rise in shares in China lifted sentiment in thin trade. The Nikkei had started down as a report about China's property market fuelled worries about the economic outlook, and the benchmark average fell as much as 1.9 percent. But a jump of more than 1 percent in shares in Shanghai and a reversal in the yen from early gains helped Japanese shares rebound, with exporters such as Canon Inc turning an early 2 percent loss into a 2 percent gain."A rise in Shanghai stocks and a pullback by the yen helped soothe market sentiment. Some investors also appeared to have bought back stocks with Japanese government bonds sagging today," said Kazuhiro Takahashi, general manager at Daiwa Securities Capital Markets."But a strong trend has struggled to emerge in Tokyo as trade has been thin as the United States was on holiday yesterday. The market will need stronger incentives to establish a clearer trend."The Nikkei closed up 71.26 points at 9,338.04.The broader Topix gained 1.2 percent to 847.24.Market players said with the settlement of Nikkei options approaching on Friday, trade was likely to be volatile.A large number of option triggers on Nikkei futures are said to lie at 9,000 and 8,500, and the market remains gamma short -- meaning traders need to follow market moves to hedge their books, often leading to volatile moves. On the charts the Nikkei pulled back above a support level at about 9,200, which is a 50 percent retracement of its move up from its March 2009 low to its April high.If it fails to hold onto its gains, the next chart support is seen at 9,076, a trough touched last November. Its slow stochastic -- a measure of how oversold the market is and whether it is in a short-term up or down trend -- has turned higher after falling in June. But the Nikkei's MACD, a measure of market momentum, continues to fall, and the benchmark has remained below the Ichimoku cloud on the daily charts since mid-May, signalling the trend remains bearish. The market fell in June as concerns about U.S. and Chinese growth prospects hurt investor sentiment.EXPORTERS REBOUND ON YEN, NTT DOCOMO UPComments from ex-IMF chief economist Kenneth Rogoff that China's property market is beginning a "collapse" that would hit banks lifted the yen early and hit shares of Japanese exporters. But the yen later retreated and exporters recovered.Tokyo Electron Ltd edged up 0.4 percent to 4,750 yen after going as low as 4,550 yen, while Canon Inc gained 2 percent to 3,350 yen. Honda Motor Co rose 2.2 percent to 2,566 yen after shedding as much as 1.6 percent.NTT DoCoMo rose 1.7 percent to 139,300 yen after Japan's biggest mobile phone operator said it plans to allow users to switch carriers without changing their handsets.ABC Mart Inc fell 2.4 percent to 3,290 yen after the shoe retailer said its June same-store sales declined 1.5 percent from a year earlier, the first drop in eight months, blaming bad weather for keeping shoppers at home.

Secret of success of German WC juggernaught is coach Low `s lucky blue jumper!

London, Jul 6 (ANI): The secret behind the youthful German team's success in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa is being attributed to coach Joachim Low's lucky blue sweater.Germany has thrashed England and Argentina to set up a semi-final against Spain tomorrow, surprising the football pundits with their all round game.Low insists that though he is not one to believe in lucky charms, people are begging him to keep wearing the same top."I'm not driven by superstition but the coaching staff want me to wear the blue sweater because we always score four goals when I do. It is becoming almost a running gag. People keep going on about it," he said."I'm not even allowed to wash it now even though I've worn it several times. I think I will wear it again against Spain," The Sun quoted Low, as saying. The German coach has been wearing exactly the same outfit as his assistant Hansi Flick throughout the tournament. They started out with a cardigan and matching shirt for the opening win over Australia and the 1-0 defeat to Serbia, after which they switched to the blue jersey under a suit. Sukhoi superjet engines have flaws: Report

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Moscow, July 6 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Engines for Russia's new Superjet-100 airliner have failed to receive certification as they have several significant flaws, a business daily said Tuesday. The Superjet-100 project is a family of medium-haul passenger aircraft developed by the Sukhoi aircraft maker in cooperation with the US and European aviation corporations, including Boeing, Snecma, Thales, Messier Dowty, Liebherr Aerospace and Honeywell.Russian deputy industry and trade minister Denis Manturov, who heads the commission to monitor Superjet's production, prepared a report unveiling the current problems and obstacles in the way of certification, the paper said.Certification had not yet been granted as the aircraft successfully completed only 25 percent of the flight tests on electronics and 60 percent of safety tests, the paper quoted the report as saying. The document also said Superjet's SaM146 engines, designed by PowerJet, a joint venture by France's Snecma and Russia's NPO Saturn, had several significant drawbacks. Among them was an increased weight and excessive fuel consumption.Sukhoi started the engine certification programme in February 2009 and plans to run certification tests in line with European, the US and Russian standards, which would allow the plane to operate without restrictions anywhere in the world. The aircraft maker plans to manufacture at least 700 Superjet-100s, and intends to sell 35 percent of them to North America, 25 percent to Europe, 10 percent to Latin America, and seven percent to Russia and China.Currently, Sukhoi has at least 122 firm orders for Superjet-100 airliners. The first aircraft are expected to be delivered to Armenia's national airline Armavia and Russia's flagship air carrier Aeroflot at the end of the year.

INTERVIEW - Afghanistan gets first 24-hour news TV

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

From something resembling a small armed camp in a closed-off Kabul street, Afghanistan has just begun receiving its first look at home-grown, 24-hour news courtesy of Saad Mohseni, the country's biggest media mogul. The politically connected Moby Media Group chairman last week launched a CNN-style news feed to what he expects to be about 1 million viewers shaping Afghanistan's future, from government to foreigners and even the resurgent Taliban."For me, 24-hour news was a no brainer," Mohseni told Reuters in an interview."In Afghanistan, you need to know what's going on. If there's a bomb blast in Karte-Seh and you've got your kids going to school there, you need to know which roads are closed, if security forces are in control of the area."A strong critic of President Hamid Karzai, Mohseni and his brother Jahid control a modest but growing media empire based out of a cluster of dilapidated houses at the end of a barricaded cul-de-sac, guarded by a dozen men armed with AK-47s.From a small upstairs office walled with flatscreens and curtained off from the street, the fast-talking ex-banker has in 5 years gone from owning a single Kabul FM radio station to cutting deals with News Corp's Rupert Murdoch to beam-in Persian-language programmes to 120 million people in Iran and central Asia. But with a diet of Indian soap operas showing unveiled women and pixilated cleavage, American Idol-style "Afghan Star" talent shows and uncompromising exposure of government corruption, including election vote-rigging, Mohseni has also built a formidable array of political and religious critics."TOUGH NEIGHBOURHOOD""It's a tough neighbourhood. There are times when relations with individual institutions and our organisation is tense and it can even lead to violence. We've had people arrested and beaten," he said.Mohseni's Tolo (Dawn) 24 began broadcasting at a vital time in Afghanistan, with new U.S. and NATO forces commander General David Petraeus arriving to take command of the fight against a Taliban at their strongest since their 2001 overthrow. At the same time, Karzai is under pressure to match a U.S. troop surge meant to turn the tide of the war with improved governance and development, including a crackdown on the entrenched corruption driving support away from his government.Mohseni, once on close terms with Karzai before a falling out over coverage of government graft and ineptitude, said he had lost faith in the president's ability to deliver on the reforms needed for Afghanistan to find stability."It doesn't look good right now. We have to see signs that the government is going to take on these challenges and to tackle these problems, and at the moment we are not very optimistic," he said."It's all about beginning the momentum. Ultimately people would like to see change, positive change, so if the government takes the right steps, you'd be amazed how quickly they could regain the momentum. It's still ours to lose."Mohseni, raised largely in Australia and a strong supporter of the American presence in the country, said the new channel aimed to inform Afghans and allow debate, providing the public with different policy alternatives and possibilities.Afghanistan's 30 million population is on track to reach 100 million by 2050, with 60 percent under the age of 20 and rapidly urbanising. The capital is set to grow from 5 million people to 8 million by 2014, bringing new opportunities for Mohseni's Tolo."We are going to be grappling with a very young nation, much bigger than it is now, and we have to move forward," he said."Corruption is a major issue, but we all have a role to play in that. We have all made mistakes. People bribe on a daily basis. Ultimately I'm optimistic, or I wouldn't be investing all this money here."(Editing by David Fox)

China denounces new unilateral U.S. sanctions on Iran

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

China denounced the United States on Tuesday for imposing its own sanctions on Iran, saying Washington should not unilaterally take such steps outside of U.N. resolutions.Last week, U.S. President Barack Obama signed into law far-reaching new sanctions on Iran that aim to squeeze the Islamic Republic's fuel imports and deepen its international isolation."China has already noted that the United States and other parties have unilaterally put in place further sanctions against Iran," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang told a news briefing in Beijing."Not long ago, the U.N. Security Council approved resolution 1929," Qin said, referring to sanctions placed on Iran last month. "China believes that the Security Council resolution should fully, seriously and correctly be enforced and cannot be wilfully elaborated on to expand Security Council sanctions measures."The U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate approved the new sanctions bill that penalises companies supplying Iran with gasoline as well as international banks involved with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. It came after the U.N. Security Council passed a resolution toughening sanctions on Iran over its refusal to stop enriching uranium.Iran insists its nuclear programme is for the peaceful generation of electricity but the United States and other powers suspect it is a cover to build an atomic bomb.Qin repeated that China believed talks were the best way to resolve the dispute over Iran's nuclear activities.Iran is a major supplier of crude to China, the world's second-biggest consumer of oil after the United States, providing over 10 percent of imports last year.Dominated by energy shipments, bilateral trade has grown from around $10 billion in 2005 to more than $20 billion last year.(Reporting by Ben Blanchard and Huang Yan; Editing by Nick Macfie)

Cong asks Jagan not to go on yatra, threatens action

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

New Delhi, Jul 6 (PTI) Congress today asked a defiant party MP Y S Jaganmohan Reddy not not to go ahead with his controversial yatra and threatened him with disciplinary action if he did not not obey."All true committed and loyal Congressmen must necessarily observe both the party dharma and laxman rekha of propriety and party discipline," party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said.In an indication of the party toughening its stand on the issue, he said, "Failure to do so would perforce lead to a chain of consequences, which are best avoidable. We hope and trust that compliance will take the place of defiance."The Congress spokesperson maintained that "party discipline like law does not discriminate between individuals."Notwithstanding party chief Sonia Gandhi's reservations about it, Reddy, the son of late Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YSR Reddy, has decided to resume his controversial "Odarpu" yatra from July 8 to console party workers grieving his father's loss.Jagan, who had defied the party directive against undertaking the yatra in May also, had met Gandhi along with his family members on June 29 to seek her permission for the tour. The meeting took place in New Delhi on the request of Jagans mother Vijayalakshmi.During the meeting, the Congress chief had suggested assembling the affected families at one place to console them and also to offer financial assistance, the young Lok Sabha MP said.In an open letter to the people, he said, "We explained to her the need to resume the yatra to console the family members of those who died following the death of my father. She (Sonia Gandhi) did not cite any specific reason but did not appear to be favourably inclined over resuming the yatra."Jagan would pay tributes to his father at Idupulapaya, the family estate where he was buried, today and later proceed to Ichapuram in Srikakulam district to resume his tour.Defying the Congress high command's directive earlier, Jagan had left by train to start his yatra in Warangal district on May 28 but it was marred by violent protests from Telangana supporters.

Select edible oils decline amid lower global trend

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

New Delhi, July 6 (PTI) Wholesale prices of select edible oils fell by Rs 20 per quintal at the oils and oilseeds market in the national capital today owing to slackness in demand amid a weakening trend in overseas markets. On the other hand, non-edible oils continued to trade at around their previous levels in the absence of activity. The sentiment turned bearish after palm oil declined to its lowest level in more than seven months in Malaysia, following a fall in crude oil for the sixth day, which cooled demand for the commodity used in bio-diesel. Meanwhile, palm oil for September delivery lost 0.6 per cent to USD 724 a metric tonne, the lowest since November 13, on the Malaysia Derivatives Exchange. Marketmen said beside the weakening global trend, a fall in demand at existing higher levels also put some pressure on select wholesale edible oil prices. In the edible section, soyabean refined mill delivery (Indore) and soyabean degum (Delhi) oils fell by Rs 20 each to Rs 4,380 and Rs 4,280, while palmolein (rbd) and crude palm oil (ex-Kandla) were being traded lower by a similar margin at Rs 4,100 and Rs 3,620 per quintal. Successful strike buoys opposition, for now

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

A successful national strike against high prices has rejuvenated the opposition, but their disunity may hamper efforts to force the Congress party-led government to go-slow on its reforms agenda. In what was the biggest show of opposition strength in recent years, many parts of the country shut down on Monday to protest raising of fuel prices when inflation was in double-digits.While the strike's success could see a united opposition disrupt the government push for reform bills in parliament this month, any long-term impact on policy is unlikely primarily because of the opposition parties' vast ideological differences.Leftist groups and the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have not allied in more than two decades."They appear united at this point of time, but this political capital can evaporate very fast given the ideological contradictions within the opposition," said Sudha Pai, professor of politics at the Jawaharlal Nehru University.India's opposition has appeared hobbled since last year's national election, which the Congress-led coalition won decisively. Indeed, Congress's own parliamentary allies have often proved more of a headache in passing reform bills. That defeat sent the BJP into disarray, touching off a leadership struggle and a debate over its ideological identity. The leftists lost even in their bastions.Political momentum saw the ruling coalition, which has a majority of seven seats in a 545-seat parliament, push some reforms, including a new tax code and disinvestment in some state-run firms. But other reforms have been put on backburner, including opening up the retail, banking and insurance sectors, largely due to a lack of consent from Congress allies worried about angering voters ahead of state elections in coming months.Monday's strike does show that the opposition to the ruling Congress party-led coalition can unite on one particular issue."Yesterday's (Monday's) strike showed there is a unity of action on road and there was always a unity of action in the (parliament) House," said Prakash Javdekar, BJP spokesman. But most analysts remain sceptical of what an Indian newspaper described as a "cohabitation approach" of the left and rightist opposition."I can't see how they can force a change in policies the government wants to project," Pai said.(Additional reporting by Bappa Majumdar; Editing by Alistair Scrutton and Sugita Katyal)

PSB to start selling gold, silver coins

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

New Delhi, July 6 (PTI) Trying to cash in on the high prices of precious metals, state-run Punjab & Sind Bank today said it will soon start selling gold and silver coins. "PSB is on the threshold of launching a customer-friendly scheme to sell gold and silver coins and bars of small denominations," PSB Executive Director P K Anand said. The gold coins will be of 24 carat gold and of 999.99 per cent purity, as per the highest international standards, the bank said in a statement. "These will be competitively priced on the basis of prices ruling in the international bullion market," Anand said. The prices of the yellow metal, which is traditionally used by Indians as an investment and gifting option, are currently hovering at the level of Rs 18,700 per ten grams in the national capital. Silver coins, on the other hand, have been trading at above Rs 34,000 per 100 pieces. "In the present scenario, gold provides an excellent hedge against inflation, a source of liquidity and a form of savings as well," Anand said.

German injury worries ease ahead of semi-final

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Germany's injury worries have cleared up ahead of Wednesday's World Cup semi-final with Spain, with team manager Oliver Bierhoff declaring that all the squad are fit for the clash in Durban.Germany will be without suspended midfielder Thomas Mueller but Sami Khedira and Cacau, who have been training separately for the past two days, were available to coach Joachim Loew, said Bierhoff.Central defender Arne Friedrich, who had a foot problem, also sat out training on Monday but will be ready to play."The most important thing is for the coach to be able to pick from all the squad except for Mueller," said Bierhoff who said the team would cope with the absence of the exciting 20-year-old."In a tournament a team settles and so Thomas's absence is a little link in the chain missing and he has been outstanding," said the Germany team manager."The team have reacted admirably whenever key players (have been) missing," he said.Germany have several options for replacing Mueller with Cacau and Toni Kroos in the frame but the most likely choice is winger Piotr Trochowski, positionally more of a straight swap. China says jailing of U.S. geologist its own affair

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

China said on Tuesday that the jailing of a U.S. geologist for eight years for stealing state secrets was an internal matter than no other country had the right to interfere.Xue Feng, a 44-year-old U.S. citizen born in China, was detained late in 2007 after negotiating the sale of an oil industry database to his employer at the time, Colorado-based consultancy IHS Energy, now known as IHS Inc.The U.S. Embassy in Beijing said it was "dismayed" at the sentence and concerned about Xue's rights of due process under Chinese law.Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said the sentencing was a domestic matter."China's judicial departments have handled this case strictly by the law. This is China's internal affair," Qin told a news briefing. "China's internal affairs and judicial sovereignty cannot be interfered with by foreign countries."Xue was convicted of attempting to obtain and traffic in state secrets, a year after his trial ended, said the Duihua Foundation, which promotes prisoners' rights in China and the United States. The database was classified as a state secret only after it was sold, it added.China's notoriously vague state secrets laws received international attention last year when Australian citizen Stern Hu and three colleagues working for mining giant Rio Tinto were detained for stealing state secrets during the course of tense iron ore negotiations. The four were later convicted of the lesser charges of receiving kickbacks and stealing commercial secrets.(Reporting by Ben Blanchard and Huang Yan; Editing by Chris Lewis)(For more news on Reuters India, click http://in.reuters.com)

India Post global money transfer comes under ED scanner

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

New Delhi, July 6 (PTI) Global money transfer and banking operations of the country''s postal department are being scanned by the Enforcement Directorate and other agencies for suspected terror-financing and Hawala-like transactions. At present, there are no other official channels, besides the pure banking route, to transfer or receive money from abroad. The Department of Posts had started this service in association with US-based Western Union Financial Services in April 2001 and customers can send or receive money from 205 countries. According to top Finance Ministry sources, the ED and the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) -- an agency to monitor suspect financing in Indian financial channels -- have initiated steps to check the remittances and transactions on the wires on a "real time basis". In 2008-09, the ''India Post'' had delivered remittances to the tune of more than Rs 7,649 crore. While the ED has asked ''India Post'' to keep a check on all "kinds of transactions" and inform it of suspect transactions, the FIU has asked the service provider to strictly comply with the reporting norms. Under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), all banking entities or financial intermediaries who facilitate telegraphic or wire transfers or electronic remittances have to report the nature and value of the transactions to the FIU. "Also, the banking operations conducted by the India Post have been largely unregulated. There are many small accounts with a lot of money. The enforcement agencies are now tracking the remittances and withdrawals," a source said. The international money transfer service is currently available from 8,511 post offices. Enforcement agencies believe that this step to monitor India Post network would help them track down suspect financial transactions and further share it with internatioanl agencies to combat money laundering and financing of terror. Naval version of LCA rolled out, Antony says memorable moment

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Bangalore, Jul 6 (PTI) India's first indigenous Naval Light Combat Aircraft, touted as the only carrier-borne warplane in the light category in the world, rolled out here today in an important milestone for the Navy.Defence Minister A K Antony described as "a defining and a memorable moment" the roll-out of the two-seater LCA (Navy) NP1 whose first test-flight is expected by this year-end.The naval version of IAF's LCA assembled at the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) facility here is now ready to undergo systems integration tests, leading to ground runs, taxi trials and flights, officials said. Once the ground based tests are completed it is expected to make its maiden flight by the end of this year. The aircraft, with state of the art technologies and punch, is designed to operate from the future indigenous aircraft carriers the Navy plans to acquire. It is the first indigenous effort to build a complete air element for the Navy.It will be operating with a wide variety of operational weapons and equipment like the Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missile, Anti-ship Missiles, Conventional bombs, Air Defence guns, and drop tanks."It is a defining and a memorable moment as it will give boost to indigenisation," Antony said at the event attended by Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Nirmal Verma, Secretary (Defence Production) and top officials of HAL and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).The warplane has been developed under the prestigious Naval Programme of Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA).Antony utilised the occasion to urge all the partners including ADA, HAL, DRDO and CSIR to "not only maintain the tempo but to take it to the feverish pitch and ensure the first flight of NP1 in the next three to four months".The development of a naval aircraft is a challenging task and testing it is an even more complex operation, he said."Towards this end a shore based test facility (SBTF) is under construction at the naval air station in Goa, which will also have facility for a sky jump for take off arresting gear like in a ship," the Defence Minister said.Noting that the specialised equipment for SBTF would be supplied by Russia, Antony said, "I understand that the take off area of landing will be ready soon. This facility can be used as a training centre for both pilots and maintenance and makes it a precious national asset."The development of LCA (Navy) NP1 and its fighter counterpart (NP2) is aimed at providing a formidable platform with a higher thrust engine and an optimised mass for suitable replacement to the ageing Sea Harriers at a later date. The aircraft will fly with US-made GE-F-404-IN20 engine and is specifically designed for ski jump take off and arrested landing, with high landing loads compared to its Air Force counterpart. The formal sanction by the government for the Naval programme was given in the year 2003. The first stage of development includes design and fabrication of one trainer and one fighter--NP1 and NP2 respectively--along with a shore-based test facility (SBTF) in Goa, to simulate carrier take off and arrested landing.

Washington, July 6 (ANI): A new drug called olaparib may help thousands of women suffering from genetic breast cancer, if results of the first tests on patients are to be believed. The researchers behind the study tested the drug on 54 women with advanced genetic breast cancer, and found that the drug olaparib could stop the growth of tumours and shrink them in more than 40 per cent of cases. In fact, one patient"s tumour disappeared completely after treatment with the drug.A large number of cases of breast cancer are caused by defects on the BRCA-1 and BRCA-2 genes, which put women at much higher risk of developing aggressive cancers of the breast or ovaries. And, usually, women who test positive for the mutations have their breasts removed as a precaution, because they have an 80 per cent risk of developing breast cancer in their lifetime.Olaparib, made by AstraZeneca, is the first of a new class of drugs specifically designed to treat BRCA-related cancers to be tested on patients.Scientists have said that if further tests prove to be successful, they could be used at an early stage to treat or prevent disease occurring within affected families.Andrew Tutt, director of the Breakthrough Breast Cancer Research Unit at King"s College London, who led the trial, said that the results for olaparib were "very promising"."We are hopeful that olaparib could provide a targeted treatment for women with BRCA-related breast cancer. Some women also develop breast cancer before they know they are carrying the gene, or see it recur if they have been diagnosed previously," Times Online quoted him as saying.Olaparib works by blocking a protein that makes cancer cells which have a BRCA fault unable to repair their own DNA, which causes the cancer cell to die and means that the tumour should either stop growing or get smaller. As the drug works in a targeted way, it kills cancer cells while leaving healthy cells alone in a way that chemotherapy does not, which could help to reduce the punishing side-effects of cancer treatment. In the study carried out at hospitals in Britain, Europe, the US and Australia, 27 patients took 100mg oral doses of olaparib while another 27 took 400mg doses. The researchers observed that over 40 per cent of tumours in the higher dose group reduced significantly in size, while all tumours were prevented from progressing for an average of six months.Tutt said that orlaparib might also have potential as an early-stage or preventative treatment. He added: "It is important to remember this drug is at a very early stage of development."The findings were presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology conference in Orlando, Florida, the world"s largest gathering of cancer scientists. Defence sector may be exempted from MSEs procurement policy

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

New Delhi, July 6 (PTI) The defence sector may be exempted from the proposed compulsory government procurement from small and medium firms, as it imports most of its requirement, a senior government official today said. "We have agreed with the Defence (Ministry) point of view that it can be exempted, but depends upon the final decision," Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Secretary Dinesh Rai told reporters here on the sidelines of a programme organised jointly by FISME, Indiamart.com and IAMAI. The Defence Ministry imports most of its requirements like planes and equipment. "They have to buy many things from abroad, so they won''t able to do (procure from MSEs). They have a point, which we agreed to and many times they do not want to divulge.," Rai said. Besides, ministries, including home and petroleum, and PSUs under them are opposed to the idea of procuring from these micro and small enterprises (MSEs), as they doubt the quality of products from MSME units. The Home Ministry has some issues, they need more time, so let them take some time, the Secretary added. A task-force chaired by Prime Minister''s principal secretary TKA Nair had called for a compulsory procurement policy for MSEs. The task-force had submitted its report to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in January. The MSME Ministry would take the proposal before the Cabinet for its approval soon. "We are expected to go to the Cabinet within 10 days. We have given the views of the different ministries, then it is up to the Cabinet to decide," Rai said. There are 2.6 crore MSME units in the country, of which 1.86 crore are in the services space. The sector, which was hit by the recent global financial meltdown, contributes 8 per cent to GDP, 45 per cent of the manufactured output and 40 per cent of exports.
