17 bikes seized as cops bust theft racket

Mumbai, July 26 -- An intra-state bike theft racket was busted with the arrest of two persons and Seventeen bikes were recovered from them. Sandeep Chauhan (26) and Alvesh Waghela (25) had been stealing and selling bikes for one and half years, said the police. Chauhan, who works for an architect, is a resident of Dahisar (East). Waghela lives in Borivli. Bhagwan Chate, senior inspector, said on Sunday that the questioning of the duo was on to find the exact number of vehicles they had stolen. Acting on a tip-off, the police laid a trap and arrested the two from their houses on Thursday. Explaining their modus operandi, the police said the duo would steal bikes from Kandivli, Borivli, Dahisar, Vasai and Virar areas. The stolen bikes would then be sold in other parts of Maharashtra-outside Mumbai - for Rs 10,000-Rs 15,000. The police said the maximum bikes were stolen from the parking lot outside Rajmahal Hotel in Borivli (West). Posing as bank recovery agents, they would tell their clients the bike owners had failed to pay installments and they had been directed by the bank to sell off the bikes. On some occasions they would tell the buyer that the original owner had mortgaged the bike and they failed to pay.The police have recovered 17 Hero Honda motorcycles and said there could be more bikes that they had stolen and sold.
