Bhatt objects to changes proposed in Copyright Bill

Mumbai, Jul 6 (PTI) Expressing reservations about the proposed changes in the Copyright (Amendment) Bill 2010, filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt has said it should be sent back for re-drafting. "The producers are feeling marginalised and they feel that the Copyright Bill, 2010 in its present form should be sent back for re-drafting," he said on the micro-blogging site Twitter today. The bill which was introduced in Rajya Sabha in April this year and sent to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on HRD gives independent rights to writers, lyricists, composers and directors. Bhatt is part of the 10-member Committee set up by the Government to look into the proposed amendments to the Copyright Act. The proposed amendment has been prepared without proper understanding of the Indian Film Industry, its practises and nuances of existing laws, the filmmaker said. "The fact is that the composers/singers make millions by performing on hit songs by way of live shows whereas the producers take the entire commercial risk. How can you ask for an equal share in the profit when u don''t share the loss," he said. A wrong perception has been built up giving an impression that composers do not make money from a hit song, he added. Last month, some producers deposed before the Standing Committee and opposed the proposed Copyright (Amendment) Bill 2010, saying it will affect their interest. (More) PTI MR VKV.
