More than a week after the Union Home Ministry's deadline of one week for cellular operators in Jammu and Kashmir to verify all mobile connections, the private service providers have snapped thousands of mobile connections across the state. The decision to disconnect the mobile connections has been taken on the directions of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) that has asked the service providers to cut-off services to all the subscribers, who have more than one connection in their name."My (mobile) service was disconnected today," said Zubair Ahmad, an Airtel subscriber. "They (service providers) disconnected my services without any intimation".Sources in the telecom sector say that Airtel, Aircel, Vodafone, Reliance, Tata Indicom and Idea have snapped thousands of connections in the past two days across the Valley. They say the DoT that has asked the operators to issue only one SIM card per person."We have got the directives from DoT," a senior Airtel official told The Indian Express. "We are in the process of snapping connections of all those subscribers who have more than one connection in their name. We are not sure how many mobile connections would be snapped but it definitely would be in tens of thousands".The Home Ministry had warned the cellular operators of strict action if they failed to verify all the connections in Jammu and Kashmir within seven days. The ministry had also asked the operators to cancel all the franchisees in the state and had said that it will book franchisees under criminal charges if a SIM card obtained on fake identity papers is recovered from a militant or criminal. The ministry had also made the top officers of the cellular companies accountable for any misuse of SIM cards.Following the directive, the cellular operators in the Valley have cancelled more than 150 distributorships.
