New Delhi, Jul 7 (PTI) As the army moved into curfew-bound areas of Kashmir, the Centre today said the force will remain there till necessary for a "deterrent effect" for the shortest possible time. The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, took stock of the situation in the valley arising out of stone-pelting incidents which has led to a spiral of violence there. Sources in the government said after the meeting that Home Secretary G K Pillai would be visiting Kashmir to take stock of the situation there. "Army steps in only when things go out of control . It is not a situation the army would like to be in. But whenever it is necessary and in the interest of the nation, we step in," Minister of State for Defence M M Pallam Raju told reporters here. "(Army will stay) as long as it is necessary. But we would like to make it as short as possible," Raju said, when asked about the presence of the army in Srinagar on the sidelines of a seminar. He said it became necessary for the army to stage a flag march in the state''s capital at the request of the state government in view of the ground situation. Sources in the central government said the Army has been moved in for a "deterrent effect". Army would be on the periphery and would be called whenever needed, they said, adding the decision to deploy Army would be taken by the local administration. Indefinite curfew has been imposed in the city following violence yesterday that left three persons dead and over 70 injured. Curfew will remain imposed in the troubled areas till the miscreants are arrested, the sources said.
