Construction debris choking drains in Delhi

New Delhi, July 6 (IANS) With the first spell of monsoon flooding parts of the capital, authorities Tuesday warned contractors to dump debris from Commonwealth Games-projects only at select sites.'We have identified 168 dumping sites. The accumulation of debris on streets and public places is prohibited,' a Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) official said.'The contractors engaged in Games projects should dump the debris (only) in earmarked sites, or else their payments will be withheld,' the official told IANS.Tonnes of left-over debris are choking the drains, causing rainwater to flood the streets.The civic agency has two super sucker machines to clean up the larger drains, and is in the process of procuring two more at an approximate cost of Rs.1 crore each.
