Vadodara, Jul 6 (PTI) One of the two cubs abandoned by a lioness in Gir forest died today, while the other has been sent to a wildlife care centre at Sasan in Junagadh district, Gujarat forest department officials said. The cub who died was in healthy condition when found in Visavadar forest range four days ago. It probably succumbed to some infection. However, the other cub, who seemed weak, has survived, Assistant Conservator of Forest L M Kandoria told PTI. The Forest Department staff is continuing its search for the lioness who abandoned her cubs, aged two to three months, said Kandoria. Visavadar is part of the Gir forest, the last abode of Asiatic lions. The cubs were spotted by a patrolling team last week and kept under the care of veterinary staff, R Katara, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), said. The surviving cub is in care of a veterinary doctor and is being provided with adequate food at the wildlife centre, he said. Once the cub gets well, efforts will be made to reunite it with its mother, Kandoria said. It was not known as to why the lioness abandoned her cubs, though there could be various reasons for this behaviour, he added.
