Lucknow, July 7 (PTI) With the new academic session beginning in Uttar Pradesh, state DGP Karamvir Singh has asked police officials to maintain strict vigil in their respective areas to ward off any incident of ragging in universities and educational institutions. In his letter to district police heads, the DG has asked them to keep a tab on elements indulging in or encouraging ragging in educational institutions and deal sternly with them, ADG law and order Brij Lal told newspersons here. Describing students as the future of the country, the ADG said intelligence should be gathered on elements encouraging ragging and concrete steps be taken to check the practice. Meetings should be held with the managements of such institutions to ensure firm action against those encouraging ragging, he said. Ragging is a social evil which takes a toll on simple and intelligent students and the Supreme Court has also directed the colleges to take pre-emptive measures besides getting the students to sign a contract against it at the time of admissions, he said.
