A German court sentenced a 32-year-old Turkish citizen on Monday to six years in prison for membership of al Qaeda and helping to recruit one of the militant Islamist group's most public faces in Germany. The court in the western city of Koblenz said it had convicted the man, identified as Oemer O., for belonging to al Qaeda, providing the group with financial and logistical support, and undertaking training in militant camps. It also handed down a sentence of 2-1/2 years to a co-defendant, German citizen Sermet I., 32, for supplying money and military aid to al Qaeda on at least two occasions. It is standard practice for German court papers to identify defendants by first name and last initial. Both men came from the Stuttgart area of southwest Germany.Near the end of 2006, Oemer O. helped recruit wanted German-Moroccan Bekkay Harrach for al Qaeda, the court said.Harrach came to public attention in 2009 when he broadcast threats against Germany in a series of online videos, notably just before the last federal election in late September.During 2005 and 2006, Oemer O. obtained money and logistical supplies needed for al Qaeda's jihad (holy war), the court found. He also took part in two training camps on the Afghan-Pakistani border in 2006 and in 2008, it added. The convictions brought to an end a trial which had been in court for a total of 61 days, and included the testimonies of 119 witnesses and nine experts, authorities in Koblenz said.(Reporting by Dave Graham, editing by Mark Trevelyan)(For more news on Reuters India, click http://in.reuters.com)
