New Delhi, Jul 7 (PTI) The Delhi High Court today sought response from the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) as to why the vacancies for the posts of Public Prosecutors have not been filled despite the Delhi government''s request last year. A Division Bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Manmohan issued notice to the Commission through its counsel Naresh Kaushik and sought the reply by July 13. The Court issued notice after Najmi Waziri, Standing Counsel for NCT government, submitted before the Bench that a request has been sent to UPSC in July last year for filling up of 44 vacancies for the post of Public Prosecutor (PP) for various trial courts. However, appearing for the PPs Association, Siddharth Luthra told the Bench that more than 200 posts for prosecutors were vacant and government has failed to fill them. He further stated that due to lack of basic infrastructure and low salary, many people join as prosecutors but do not prefer to continue. Earlier, the Bench took suo motu cognisance of a letter written by a group of undertrials that due to delay in the trial process they end up spending more time in jail than the prescribed sentence under the law. Later, it came to the court''s knowledge that due to shortage of Public Prosecutors in courts, the hearing of cases get delayed as one PP was assigned the cases at more than one court.
