Shimla, July 19 (IANS) Sutlej Jal Vidyut Nigam Ltd (SJVNL) authorities Monday closed the 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri hydropower project in Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh after the level of silt suddenly increased in the Sutlej river. The shutdown has led to power shortage in the northern region.'The silt content in the river increased more than permissible limit of 7,500 ppm (part per million) due to rainfall in the region forcing us to temporarily closing the generation,' Vijay Verma, deputy general manager of SJVNL, told IANS.This is this season's second closure of the plant. Earlier, the plant was closed for a day June 24.'The generation would resume any time as the slit level comes down,' he added.SJVNL, a joint venture between the central government and the Himachal government, daily generates about 38 million units, which are supplied to Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
