Five years after the deluge on July 26, 2005, a public meeting held at the Maharashtra Nature Park, Mahim, to discuss the status of the Mithi river and the work done by officials to combat future floods, saw just a handful audience.Organised by NGOs Jal Biradari and Mithi Nadi Sansad, the 'jan sunwai' was attended by representatives of National Environmental Engineering Research Institute, the Maharashtra Nature Park and a group of interested citizens. Officials of MMRDA and BMC, who were also invited, remained absent, however, despite the government non-attendance, the group made several resolutions, a participant said.In the anvil is a plan to formulate a legal cell that can look into the current status of the Mithi River. "We will soon form a database, detailing all the past advises and action taken over Mithi. The database will list the suggestions give by various committees (like the Chitale Committee), following 26/7, the action taken so far and money spent," Janak Daftary of Mithi Nadi Sansad said.An representative present at the meeting said: "Over the past five years, crores of public money has been spent on cleaning up Mithi. However, if we take a good look, no suggestion made by any committee has been properly implemented. Instead, all the authorities who have claimed to have cleaned up the river have done so arbitrarily. A database would help us take a systematic look at all the action taken."According to Daftary, once constituted, the legal cell can look in to possible actions that can be taken.Starting this year, the group has also decided to celebrate 26/7 as Mithi Day, a day when the Mumbai citizen can show their respects to Mithi River. "We will form a Mithi Mitra Mandal, which will encourage locals to take up responsibility for areas along the river."
