India-Africa internet cable fault repair may take 6-8 days

Johannesburg, July 7 (PTI) Internet services between India and Africa will continue to remain affected and it could take days to fix the problem. A fault in an undersea cable has hit services between Mumbai and Mombasa since Monday and a full repair would take at least 6-8 days, Mauritius-headquartered Seacom, which owns the cable, said today. The undersea cable connects South Africa, Mozambique, Tanzania and Kenya, among other countries, with India and Europe. "Seacom experienced a submarine failure resulting in service downtime between Mumbai and Mombasa. This unexpected failure affects traffic towards both India and Europe," the company said on Monday. In an update today, the company said it has successfully secured a number of restoration options for its clients through other international connectivity providers, including cable networks. "Whilst the repair process is expected to last a minimum of 6-8 days, the actual duration is unpredictable due to external factors such as transit time of the ship, weather conditions and time to locate the cable," the firm noted. Even though the exact cause for the disruption is still being investigated, Seacom said current assessment points to a technical issue on the cable offshore to the north of Mombasa, Kenya. Going by Seacom''s website, optical fibre pairs are provided from Kenya to France into a PoP (Point of Presence) in Marseilles, and from Tanzania to India into the PoP in Mumbai.
