ONGC beat Namdhari XI 3-2 for third straight win

Chennai, Jul 19 (PTI) Oil and Natural Gas Corporation today scored their third straight win after beating Namdhari XI 3-2 in the 86th MCC Murugappa Hockey tournament here today. ONGC, who tallied nine points after today''s win, will play Indian Railways on Wednesday in their last match. ONGC went ahead in the 12th minute through Bikas Toppo and drag-flicker Diwakar Ram struck twice in the 34th and 40th minutes. For Namdharis, who displayed cohesion but lacked the finishing touches, Harpreet Singh (23rd) and Gurbhej Singh (62nd) were the goal-scorers. Earlier, Deepak Thakur hogged the limelight with three goals in Indian Oil Corporation''s 6-3 win over Punjab National Bank in Pool B. Ramachandra Raghunath scored the first goal and Prabhjot Singh netted the fourth and sixth goals, while Deepak Thakur netted the second, third and fifth goals. For Punjab National Bank, Satpal Singh struck twice while Jatinder Saroha netted once. In another tie of the day, Indian Railways held defending champions Army XI 4-4, thanks to a last minute goal by Chengappa. Army XI were much sober today after their unruly behaviour yesterday when Sunil Ekka inflicted a bleeding injury to umpire Surya Prakash. Ekka has been banned from participating in the reminder of the tournament by Chief Referee Mohammad Muneer. Indian Railways and Army XI have four points each, from a win and a draw. For Railways, Innocent Kulu, Chinglen Sana, Lakshmishankar Yadav scored apart from Chengappa. For Army XI, Reniel Singh scored twice while Ignace Tirkey and Jerun Kujur netted once each.
