Mumbai, July 26 (PTI) On the heels of Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee''s call to revitalise state-level bankers meetings, the RBI today asked bankers to take personal interest in ensuring the attendance of chief ministers at least once a year. "Chief ministers may be encouraged to attend at least one SLBC (state-level bankers committee) meeting in a year" RBI said in a notification. There is a need to revitalise the SLBC meetings that play a very important role in development, RBI said in a communication to heads of PSU banks. "You are requested to bestow your personal attention in the matter and liaise with states to facilitate chief ministers'' participation in at least one SLBC meeting during the year," it added. Recently, in a series of regional meetings with chief minsiters and bankers, Mukherjee underlined the need for revitalising the SLBCs to promote financial inclusion. Only 5 per cent of around 6,00,000 habitations in the country have bank branches, and just about 40 per cent of the country''s population have bank accounts. "It is my firm belief that inclusive economic growth is crucial for achieving sustainable economic development. Therefore, financial inclusion is an important goal for the government," Mukherjee had said. It should be recognised that if growth is to be sustained in the medium to long-term, it has to necessarily involve the common man as an important stakeholder, he had said.
