Punjab lifts powercuts

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Chandigarh, July 6 (PTI) With heavy rains slashing demand for electricity in the northern region, Punjab has lifted the scheduled power cuts in domestic and industry categories, a state official said today. Also, the power supply to farm sector has been doubled to help farmers sow Kharif crops, including paddy. It is because of monsoon that the power situation in the state has improved and enabled us to lift all kinds of power cuts in the state, Powercom, CMD, K.D Chaudhary told PTI. The state even shut down its two Ropar power units of 210 MW each, in view of reduced demand for power across the state. We have shut down our two power units in the wake of less requirement for energy in the state, he said. Punjab, which usually struggles with supplying enough power to the farm sector in June and July due to increased demand every year, has now doubled the supply to the sector to 15 hours. "We have increased the power supply from 8 hours per day to 15 hours per day to farm sector which will immensely help the paddy growers to sow their crop, Chaudhary said. Also, he said, Punjab now had a negligible mismatch between power supply and demand. "Yesterday, the demand for power was 1,454 lakh units against supply of 1,436 lakh units in the state", he said. Two weeks back the energy demand in the state had gone up to 1,950 lakh units a day against the supply of 1,800 lakh units per day, resulting into a gap of 150 lakh units. This led the state power company, Powercom to impose two days weekly off on furnace industry and one day weekly off on general industry. Besides, it had imposed 2-3 hours power cuts everyday in domestic category, so to supply sufficient power to farm sector. PTI CHS DKS.
