Railways increase security in states facing Maoist threat

New Delhi, July 7 (PTI) Railways today beefed up security across several zones keeping in mind the two day Maoist bandh call, starting today, and intensified patrolling along the tracks amid reports of a "credible threat" from the ultras to its assets. Special task forces have been kept on standby to meet any eventuality, while train are being run in bunches escorted by pilot engines, said a Railway official. Speed restrictions on the locomotives have also been put in place. DG, RPF, Ranjit Sinha had yesterday said that the "threat appears to be credible and we are not taking any chances". The threat by Maoists includes a warning to passengers not to embark on train journeys during the bandh period Railways'' concern is further heightened by the fact that Maoists have vowed to take revenge of its leader Azad''s killing by the Andhra Pradesh Police in an alleged encounter near Sarkapalli village in Adilabad district a few days back. The Home Ministry has already issued an alert to the railways in view of the Maoist bandh call. Railways is keeping a watch on train movement, especially in states like Orissa, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and parts of Maharashtra, the regions worst affected by Naxal violence, said the official. A passenger train and some goods trains were suspended in Sundargarh district in Orissa today, fearing Naxal attack, while train operations was suspended operations between Koraput and Rayagada. Suspension of night run of trains in Kharagpur division of South Eastern Railway has also been extended till July 9 as a precautionary measure. The official said speed restriction of 65 km per hour on trains is being maintained in some sections while deployment of RPF and GRP personnel in important trains are also being initiated. Initially Maoists used to damage railway tracks and goods trains but on May 28, the ultras targeted the Jnaneshweri express train by removing a portion of the track. This led to its derailment and 148 passengers were killed in the incident. PTI SGI.
