Rice procurement slides by five per cent

New Delhi, July 7 (PTI) The government procured 29.65 million tonnes of rice since October last year, five per cent less than the corresponding period of the previous year, according to the recent data released by the Agriculture Ministry of India. Food Corporation of India and other state agencies had procured 31.33 million tonnes in the year-ago period. The procurement has declined on account of sharp fall in rice production in 2009-10 crop year to 89.31 million tonnes due to drought. India had produced a record of 99.18 million tonnes in the previous year. Rice marketing year runs from October to September. The procurement of rice, which is grown in both kharif and rabi seasons, stood at record 33.68 million tonnes in 2008-09 marketing year. According to the official data, states like Punjab, Haryana and Chhattisgarh have witnessed an increase in their procurement during 2009-10 season against the previous year. Punjab has procured 9.27 million tonnes of rice so far in 2009-10 against 8.54 million tonnes during the same time last year, a 8.54 per cent increase over the last year. Similarly, Haryana''s procurement has increased to 1.81 million tonnes of rice during 2009-10 against 1.42 million tonnes in the review period, an impressive 27.46 per cent increase over last year. In the current marketing season, Chhattisgarh has bought 3.12 million tonnes of rice, an increase of 21.87 per cent from previous year''s 2.56 million tonnes. However, Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh are the two major states, which have witnessed drastic drop in rice procurement. Uttar Pradesh has till now procured 2.67 million tonnes, which is a significant 26.03 per cent less than 3.61 million tonnes it procured last year. Andhra Pradesh has also witnessed a 20 per cent drop in its rice procurement compared to last year. It has procured 6.12 million tonnes this current market season so far against 7.67 million tonnes in the corresponding period of the previous year.
