Sack secretary too: Malleswari

Olympic bronze medalist Karnam Malleswari has expressed satisfaction at having played her role in bringing forth the issue of sexual harassment against weightlifting coach Ramesh Malhotra. Malleswari said it was up to the sports ministry and SAI to take appropriate action. Malhotra has since been suspended by the IWF pending inquiry.Asked why she came out in the open now despite being in the know of such complaints throughout her career, Malleswari said: "Whatever I am saying now was never a secret. SAI officials, senior coaches, the federation and the players, all knew about it. Back then, I was myself an active player and was focusing on my game."She also said that there had been several complaints against Malhotra earlier as well. "SAI has several written complaints against him and if they couldn't act on them then, what could I have done at that time? But now that I am the vice-president of the federation, young girls look up to me and so have raised my voice on the issue. What really upset me was, despite this issue being raised in the Udaipur meeting, IWF officials, instead of taking any action, recommended him for Dronacharya award and retained as the girls' team coach."Malleswari also demanded the sacking of IWF secretary Sahdev Yadav. "Suspending the coach is not enough. The federation secretary should also be sacked because he didn't act against Malhotra despite repeated complaints. If he is not sacked then people like Malhotra will be made coach again," she said. Malleswari demanded the presence of more women members in the IWF and said with the increasing number of women coaches, girls team should essentially be assisted by ladies staff.
