Chennai, June 24 (PTI) In what is billed as the first arrest under the Senior Citizens Protection Act, a 55-year-old man was taken into custody here today after his octogenarian father complained that he was pretermitting him. Police said Kumar was the eldest of the three sons of 83-year-old Muthukrishnan, living separately after his wife''s death five years ago, without having any means to sustain himself. Police said this was the first time an arrest was made under the Act. Kumar was produced before a court which remanded him in judicial custody. Despite having enough money to make ends meet, Kumar neither took care of his father nor gave him any money, police said. Besides ignoring him, he even stopped talking to his father, they said. The other two sons, however, contributed some money to Muthukrishnan. Two years ago, Muthukrishnan had lodged a complaint with police who worked out an arrangement under which Kumar would pay his father Rs 200 every month and warned him of action if he failed to comply. Kumar had initially paid the amount for a few months but stopped it suddenly citing "lack of income". Muthukrishnan then lodged a complaint with Chennai City Police Commissioner T Rajendran and a case was registered under the Senior Citizens Protection Act. When police questioned Kumar, he claimed he did not have enough money and was depending on his wife''s earnings. However, Muthukrishnan contended that his son was earning enough money through contract works in Railways and from the printing press he owned.
