TDP bandh protesting Naidu``s arrest evokes mixed response

Hyderabad, Jul 19 (PTI) Sporadic incidents of violence were reported from different parts of Andhra Pradesh during the day-long bandh called by the TDP to protest the arrest of party chief N Chandrababu Naidu, who was stopped from visiting the controversial Babhli barrage site by Maharashtra government. The CPI and the CPM also extended support to the bandh which drew a mixed response, as businesses remained closed in various parts of the state. In Dharmabad in Maharashtra, Naidu and other arrested leaders observed a day-long fast. Sporting black badges, they garlanded the statue of Mahatma Gandhi on the Dharmabad ITI premises before launching the fast. Naidu and 74 other TDP leaders were arrested at Dharmabad in Nanded district on July 16 when they violated prohibitory orders and tried to go to the Babhli barrage site. Health of six TDP MLAs, currently in judicial remand in Dharmabad, reportedly deteriorated today. The MLAs are Abdul Ghani, Mandava Venkateswara Rao, M Kishan Reddy, P Ramulu, Linga Reddy and Meenakshi Naidu. The TDP is rushing a team of doctors and para-medics to Dharmabad to treat the ailing MLAs, senior party MLA E Dayakar Rao. Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh DGP R R Girish Kumar said the situation in the state was peaceful and the bandh passed off without any major incidents. .
