Trinamool tie-up haunts Cong MLAs, fear of losing tickets looms large

A section of Congress MLAs feel that a pre-poll tie-up with the Trinamool Congress in the forthcoming Assembly elections would prove detrimental to their chances of bagging party tickets. The issue was raised by some Congress MLAs at their legislature party meeting on Friday and they are planning to take up the issue with Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee who is also the chief of the Bengal unit of the Congress."It is a fact that a section of our MLAs are scared of losing their tickets in the 2011 Assembly elections. I will take up the issue with WBPCC president," said CLP leader Manas Bhuniya after the meeting. He added that he would also urge Mukherjee not to make such a deal with the Trinamool so that the incumbent MLAs lose their chance of recontesting from their constituencies. In the 2001 Assembly elections, Bhuniya said, 14 of the sitting MLAs were denied party tickets to maintain alliance with the Trinamool."We want an alliance (with the Trinamool). We want to remove the CPM from power but at the same time this is also a fact that without the alliance of the Congress and the Trinamool it would be impossible to oust the CPM from Bengal," he added. The CLP leader also said that the MLAs wanted floor coordination with the Trinamool in the Assembly to grill the Left Front government on various issues.Bhuniya's remark comes at a time when most political leaders are smelling early Assembly polls.Congress sources said state leaders are sure that the party will ensure an alliance with the Trinamool Congress, and Mamata Banerjee will dictate her terms, said a senior Congress leader."In view of the situation, we want to raise the issue at an early stage because we know once the election is declared there will be none to listen to us. Things should be settled immediately," said a Congress leader. On the apprehensions of Congress MLAs, senior Trinamool leader and Leader of the Opposition Partha Chatterjee said: "It is an issue to be decided by the party during election."Now, the topmost priority for the Opposition parties should be to unitedly fight to remove the CPM from power under the leadership of Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, he said.
