News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Chandigarh, June 23 (PTI) Police today claimed to have prevented two child marriages in Sirsa district of Haryana. Local police swung into action after they received a tip-off that marriage of two minor girls -- Chemali aged 17-and-a-half years and 16-year-old Sunita -- was fixed and would be solemnised on June 28, an official spokesman said here. He said District Child Marriage Prevention Cell in-charge Advocate Sadhna Mittal reached the residence of Palaram, the girls'' father, with police and convinced the family that such marriages were illegal and legal action could be taken against them. A written statement was procured from the family members who assured that the girls'' marriage would be solemnised only after they became adults, he said, adding no further action was taken in the matter.
