Two civilians were killed when CRPF personnel opened fire at a group of protestors in Sopore town on Friday evening. The protests broke out after two local militants were killed in an encounter with the Army. The government has clamped strict curfew restrictions in Sopore.When police and CRPF personnel were returning from Kranshivan locality on Friday, along with the bodies of the two militants, the protestors followed them.When they reached Chankhan, the protestors pelted stones and tried to set a CRPF vehicle on fire. The CRPF personnel then reportedly opened fire on the mob, injuring eight of them. Two of the injured, Shakeel Ahmad Gania, 24, and Firdous Ahmad Khan, 21, later succumbed to their injuries. The others have been admitted to hospital."Instead of handing us the bodies, the security forces opened fire. I was hit by a bullet," said Showket Ahmad, one of the injured.Another eyewitness, Ghulam Nabi, alleged that "the CRPF men used excessive force without any provocation and killed two innocent youths."CRPF spokesman Prabhakar Tripathi, however, said the security forces opened fire in self defence.Deputy Commissioner of Baramulla, Bashir Ahmad Bhat admitted that the situation in the town was very tense. "We are trying to investigate what actually happened. I am on my way there and will try to calm tempers," he said.Defence spokesman Lt Colonel J S Brar said the Army troops, who had killed two militants after a day-long encounter at Kranshavan locality, had already returned to their barracks. "Soon after the encounter ended, our troops handed over the bodies to the police. Our troops have no information about the killing of civilians," he said.The Hurriyat had called a general strike today against the "increased human rights violations" in the Valley. After Friday's deaths, both factions of the Hurriyat called a Kashmir bandh on Saturday and asked people to take part in a protest procession to Sopore.Meanwhile, the J&K government has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
