New Delhi, July 19 (PTI) Fourteen people perished and three others feared drowned in torrential rains that lashed Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakahand while cloudy sky engulfed over most parts of north India, dipping mercury by a few notches. The casualties were reported from Uttar Pradesh, where a flood alert was sounded in a dozen villages due to rise in water level of river Yamuna after overnight torrential rains. Uskabazar received maximum 224.2 mm rainfall followed by 190.6 mm in Trimohani, 145.2 mm in Kakrahi, 130 mm in Palliankalan, 100.6 in Bahraich, 122 mm in Ayodhya, 101.4 mm in Bansi and 90.2 mm in Bani. Three persons were feared drowned in Uttarakahand when a gush of water flooded a causeway near Rajaji Park. Incessant rains lashed Haridwar since late last night with the temple town receiving 200 mm of rainfall in just 10 hours. Other places in Uttarakhand also received heavy to very heavy rainfall with Haldwani recording 175 mm of rainfall, Kashipur 135 mm, Pantnagar 129.8 mm, Nainital 88 mm, Kotdwar 80.4 mm, Banbasa 75 mm and Ranikhet 69.6 mm of rains. Meanwhile, the national capital witnessed overcast sky for most part of the day but rains eluded the city till late in the evening. However, it resulted in the mercury falling by a few notches, giving respite to Delhiites. The city, where heavy rains are expected tomorrow, recorded a maximum temperature of 34.1 deg C, a degree below normal, and a minimum of 29.4 deg C, two notches above normal. The humidity oscillated between 79 and 66 per cent. Temperatures also stayed below normal in Punjab and Haryana where showers were recorded in some parts. However, high humidity levels, touching 90 per cent, made people sweat. The maximum dropped to 31.2 deg C in Chandigarh, which received light rains in the afternoon. The city had yesterday recorded a high of 36.6 degrees. Ambala in Haryana, too, had a pleasant day at 30.1 deg C, down four notches and against at 35.7 deg C yesterday, after receiving light rains. In Punjab, the high in Amritsar settled at 35.4 deg C followed by Patiala and Ludhiana at 33.1 and 33 deg C respectively. In Himachal Pradesh, temperature dropped marginally in mid and higher hills but it rose slightly in plains. The maximum in capital Shimla stood at 24 deg C against 23.7 deg C the previous day while Una remained the hottest at 31 deg C, a drop of two notches from that of yesterday. The day temperatures dropped by up to two degrees in Sundernagar, Bhuntar, Mandi, Nahan and Solan. Jogindernagar was wettest in the region, recording 27 mm of rains followed by Saloni 19 mm, Sujanpur Tira 16 mm, Ghamroor and Karsog 9 mm each and Nagrota Suriyan 8 mm.
