Those in Railways should ensure accidents not repeated: Cong

New Delhi, Jul 19 (PTI) Concerned over frequent rail accidents, Congress today suggested that Mamata Banerjee should get her act together. "It is an unfortunate and sad incident. Those who work in the Railways should ensure that such accidents are not repeated," party spokesman Shakeel Ahmed told reporters here. But at the same time, he said politics should not be played out in a serious accident and it would be premature to pinpoint responsibility till an inquiry report comes out. Asked whether Banerjee should take moral responsibility of the accident, Ahmed said she is the minister in charge of Railways. "It is difficult to pinpoint who was responsible without an inquiry report. Only after determining the responsibility, the Prime Minister or the Railway Minister can take action," he said. To a volley of questions on Banerjee spending more time in West Bengal than in Delhi, Ahmed said, "this is an accident. By raising political issues, one should not make light of the serious nature of the accident". The spokesman evaded replying to a question as to who was a better Railway Minister, Lalu Prasad or Banerjee. "No political party should take political mileage and twist the issue with political connotations," the spokesman added. Ahmed also downplayed suggestions that Banerjee should be in state politics rather than in the Union Cabinet, as her tenure has seen a marked increase in railway accidents. "It is the prerogative of the Prime Minister to decide who should be in the Cabinet," he said. On behalf of the AICC, Ahmed condoled the death of passengers in the accident and hoped compensation would be given to the deceased and the injured speedily. Congress sources, however, hoped that Banerjee would delegate responsibility of railways to one of her colleagues in view of her increased preoccupation in West Bengal due to the upcoming Assembly elections there. The reaction of the Congress comes as non-UPA parties targeted Banerjee, who has been accused of being busy with West Bengal politics at the cost of her ministry. BJP, LJP, RJD and CPI(M) said the collision between Sealdah-bound Uttarbanga Express and Uttaranchal-bound Vananchal Express in Bhirbhum district of West Bengal was the result of a lapse for which they held Banerjee answerable.
