3.70 lakh foreigners visit India defying scorching heat

New Delhi, July 6 (PTI) The scorching summer may have deterred citizens from venturing out much but it did not prove to be a damper for foreign tourists visiting the country as figures indicate an increase in their presence in June this year as compared to last year. India received 3.70 lakh foreign tourists in June this year as against 3.42 lakh the previous year, which is a growth of 8 per cent in foreign tourist arrivals (FTA) in June 2010 over June 2009, said a senior Tourism Ministry official. More foreigners visited the country during June than May this year. In May, 3.44 lakh foreign tourists had come here while in June the number increased to 3.70 lakh. India''s foreign exchange earning from tourism have also gone up by 25 per cent during this time, with revenue from tourism touching Rs 4,751 crore in June as compared to Rs 3,801 crores last year. The total foreign exchange earnings during January-June period this year were Rs 31,373 crores with a growth rate of 27.1 per cent.
