CM not allowing DERC to announce cut in power tariff: BJP

New Delhi, July 6 (PTI) BJP today accused Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit of "misleading" the people of Delhi on the power tariff issue and said she was not allowing power regulator DERC to announce a cut in electricity rates. Demanding a cut in tariff as planned by the regulator, Delhi BJP chief Vijendra Gupta claimed the government was not allowing the DERC to function independently and announce the new rates. "The Chief Minister is betraying the people of the city. She has been issuing misleading statements," Gupta said. Amid a standoff between the Government and DERC over fixing new power tariff, Dikshit yesterday had said that there would not be any hike in rates for the current financial year. Dikshit, who also looks after the power department, has been under attack from BJP for stalling the planned announcement of the annual power tariff for the year 2010-11 by the DERC apparently coming under pressure from the private distribution companies which have been pressing for a hike in tariff. The tussle between the DERC and the government began after the power department, exercising a special power under the Delhi Electricity Act, had directed the regulator on May 4 not to announce the new tariff structure and submit a report on the entire issue. The government move had come after discoms submitted a representation to the government requesting it to direct the DERC to hike the tariff. The DERC after receiving the government directive had indicated that it had planned to cut down the tariff by 20 to 25 per cent as discoms would have a surplus of around Rs 4,000 crore if the existing tariff was not tinkered with. Gupta said BJP will accelerate its movement demanding reduction in power tariff. Continuing its agitation, the party today held a demonstration in front of the DERC office to press for early announcement of the revised tariff.
