Lucknow, Jul 13 (PTI) The Allahabad High Court has flayed Railways for not taking adequate passenger safety measures and asked it to provide information regarding compensation paid to victims who fell through open doors of running trains between January 1, 2005 and June 30, 2010. A division bench comprising Justices Devi Prasad Singh and Satish Chandra also asked the Ministry of Railways to give a year or month-wise break-up of the compensation paid at the national level. "From time to time, this court has expressed its view to take appropriate steps for safety and security of passengers" but the Railways has not taken any step in this regard, the court observed. "Crores of rupees are paid as compensation only because a person travelling in a train fell down while standing at the door in an over crowded compartment," it said, adding "such a situation may be avoided by making appropriate provision with regard to manual or mechanical closure of doors". The court passed the order on a first appeal filed by Union of India through the Northern Railway General Manager. "The appellant may take appropriate measures for closure of doors of trains and inform about the action taken," it said and directed the Chairman, Railways Board, Baroda house, New Delhi to file his personal affidavit within two months keeping in view of its observations. The court fixed September 9 as the next date of hearing in the case.
