Chennai, Jul 6 (PTI) Family Courts in the city will start functioning on Saturdays on a regular basis beginning July 10 considering the huge number of matrimonial disputes pending before the courts. The courts would not hesitate to function on Sundays too if the litigants or their representatives agree to listing of their cases, Madras High Court Registrar General S Vimala said today. The initiative was taken by Chief Justice M Y Eqbal, she said adding it was appreciated by the Union Law and Justice Ministry. She said the nature of cases to be taken up on Saturdays would be decided by the Presiding Judge having regard to the circumstances of the case after giving prior notice. To begin with, the arrangement would be introduced in the three family courts in Chennai. Later, it has been proposed to implement it in the three family courts in Coimbatore, Madurai and Salem. Vimala said the total pendency in the family courts in the state was 16,000, including 12,000 in Chennai. Hearing of cases on holidays would facilitate participation of employed couples and those who found it inconvenient to appear before the courts on working days, thus minimising adjournments. The Law Ministry would suggest all High courts to function on holidays, particularly to address family disputes, as the professionals approaching the courts would be busy on weekdays, Union Law Minister M Veerappa Moily had said. "The holiday court is an idea mooted by the Chief Justice of Madras High Court since professionals approaching the courts are busy on weekdays," Moily told reporters on Sunday. PTI GR BN.
