New Delhi, July 26 (PTI) Under mounting pressure to complete Commonwealth Games projects, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit is using all tactics -- from announcing rewards to PWD engineers to threatening blacklisting of contractors -- to ensure finishing the works within final deadline of August 31. Days after announcing a month''s salary as reward to PWD engineers if they complete works on time, Dikshit today warned the contractors of the projects that they will face blacklisting as well as fines if they miss the new deadline. At a meeting with the contractors today, the Chief Minister also warned them not to compromise with quality of work, saying sub-standard work will invite heavy penalty. "The contractors who fail to complete the projects by August 31 will not only be penalised but also be blacklisted," Dikshit, who has been under attack for the city''s tardy preparation for the Games, said. The meeting was attended by all the Cabinet Ministers of Delhi Government besides several top officials including Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta. "Do not put us to shame. Your little carelessness will bring bad name to the entire nation," Dikshit said. With just two months left for the event and several key projects running behind schedule, Dikshit last week had ordered various agencies concerned to work through the night to finish works as soon as possible. Union Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrasekhar and Lt Governor Tejindra Khanna on Saturday had made a detailed review of Delhi''s overall preparation for the event and ordered the agencies to ensure maximum coordination to ensure early completion of the projects. In today''s meeting, several contractors complained about delay in payments following which Dikshit assured them that "money will not be a problem." She said streetscaping work has been a major area of concern as in most areas it was lagging behind. Asking the contractors to visit the site themselves, Dikshit also told them to contact the Government if they face any obstacle in completing the works. She said Delhi got the opportunity to host the event after a stiff competition and everybody should put all the hard work keeping in mind the prestige of the country. Dikshit stated in plain words that street lighting, streetscaping, putting up signage and greening work should be of high quality. She also asked them complete landscaping and beautification beneath new flyovers as early as possible. Mehta said an inter-departmental coordination is being made to overcome any delay.
