Ahmedabad, July 19 (PTI) The first-ever export consignment of bananas to Egypt from Gujarat was dispatched from a pack house facility at Jhagadia, in the southern Gujarat district of Bharuch today. "The first consignment of 25 metric tonnes of bananas was dispatched today from our newly commissioned banana pack house facility at Jhagadia," Gujarat Agro Industries Corporation Managing Director D Thara told PTI. In the past, several consignments of bananas were exported from Gujarat to Middle East countries and the reports have been quite encouraging, a GAIC official said. Exports to Egypt will open up a new market, he added. "The farmers in districts surrounding the banana pack house will now able to link with exports directly through proposed training for growing the fruit as per international quality requirements," the official said. The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has identified Gujarat, a leading banana-producing state, as one of the two states for implementation of an integrated training programme for export -oriented production of the fruit. According to the GAIC, banana productivity in Gujarat is 42.7 metric tonnes per hectare, which is higher even than the global standard of 24.7 metric tonnes per hectare, courtesy favourable agro-climatic conditions. "The production of bananas in Gujarat has been recorded at 1.9 million tonnes from 46,347 hectares in the past," Thara said. "Anand, Surat, Vadodara, Narmada, Bharuch and Kheda are amongst the major banana-producing districts, contributing almost 93.36 per cent of the total production in the state," a GAIC official said. The banana pack house, set up at an estimated cost of Rs 8 crore, was commissioned by the state-run GAIC last month. The pack house has a pre-cooling and ripening chamber, besides de-latexing, grading, sorting, quality checking, weighing, labeling, packing in polybags, de-vaccuming, cold room storage and dispatch through reefer containers facilities.
