Rice exports not likely soon: Official

New Delhi, July 19 (PTI) A senior government official today said it will be "imprudent" to lift the two-year ban on non-basmati rice exports till the estimate of Kharif crops gets firmed up, even as the food ministry is proposing to allow exports of some varieties. "Till you get some degree of certainty on the monsoons, it would be imprudent to remove the ban (on non-basmati rice exports)," the official said. On July 16, food and agriculture minister Sharad Pawar had said an empowered group of ministers on food, which is scheduled to meet later this week, would discuss "allowing export of some particular varieties of non-basmati rice". Pawar had said some states had requested to allow export of a particular variety produced in Kerala as there was a high demand in the Gulf nations. The official pointed out that till it was certain that the country is going to have a good Kharif crop (winter crop) it is not prudent to lift the ban. He further said though a section in the government favour export of non-basmati rice, the government may not permit it. "I think nobody will be willing to open the non-basmati door wide open until there is some degree of certainty that the Kharif crop is fine," he said. In April 2008, the Centre had imposed a ban on non- basmati rice exports to cool down food inflation, which is currently hovering around 12.81 per cent.
