New Delhi, Jul 19 (PTI) India and the US are jointly working towards development of cheaper alternatives to reduce indoor air pollution, one of the main causes of poor health in women and children in this country. Jointly contributing towards environmental health, the Indian Council of Medical Research and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the USA are working on a project to study the different causes of indoor air pollution and its effect on human health. Once the problem is located, based on the indigenous need of the masses, cheaper alternatives will be developed that can bring down the indoor pollution level. Dr V M Katoch, director-general of ICMR said, "A joint Indo-US project is working towards development of a cheaper alternative that can answer the problem of indoor air pollution, which has become the cause of poor health in women and especially children." "We have to recognise the causes of indoor air pollution. It can be due to the stove in the kitchen, poor ventilation in the house or the material used in construction of the building amongst many other reasons. After this we have to check the poor indoor quality and its effect on human health. "It does not end here. We will then be able to develop cheaper alternatives based on community, regional and other indigenous needs of the people," he said.
