Chandigarh, July 6 (PTI) Army help was sought today in Ambala and Kurukshetra districts of Haryana following heavy rains in the state and neighbouring Punjab which have flooded vast tracts in rural areas, including agriculture fields. An official spokesman told PTI tonight that Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda has directed the concerned officers to launch rescue operation on war-footing in those areas of the state, especially in Ambala and Kurukshetra districts where flood-like situation prevailed. Rains have disrupted road and rail traffic leaving a large number of people stranded in various areas in the two districts, officials said. Deputy Commissioner of Ambala said there is a breach in river Tangri in Jadhpur sub-division in neighbouring Punjab and river Ghaggar was also posing a threat to the district. Right side of the National Highway to Punjab from Ambala has been closed for vehicular traffic due to flooding of the road with water gushing in from areas in Punjab. In neighbouring Kurukshetra district, the SYL canal has breached near Jyotisar. Low-lying areas of Shahbad town on the Delhi-Ambala National Highway were also flooded. The Deputy Commissioners of Ambala and Kurukshetra have sought Army help in rescue operation in the two districts as a number of residential and commercial areas have been flooded. The spokesman said that three-four feet of water got accumulated in various parts of Ambala City and Ambala Cantonment. As the Chandigarh-Ambala National highway has been affected, traffic has been diverted towards Banur from Haryana''s border with Punjab on the National Highway. Haryana Chief Secretary Urvashi Gulati is in constant touch with Punjab Chief Secretary so as to expedite the relief operation. Principal Secretary (Irrigation) S S Dhillon has rushed to Ambala to expedite the rescue and relief operation. Haryana Police has urged the people not to travel in heavy vehicles on Chandigarh-Ambala National Highway as the road is flooded at various places. The supply of electricity has been affected in 300 to 350 villages in Ambala district as a number of sub-stations have got submerged in water. Pumps have been deployed to drain out rain water.
