Protests erupted at Batamaloo in Srinagar as the body of a 35-year-old shopkeeper, who had gone missing five days ago, was recovered from the Jhelum.Farooq Ahmad, relative say, had left his home early on July 20 to offer morning prayers at a local mosque but didn't return. His body was recovered on Sunday from Kanikadal in old city. "When he didn't return, we filed a report at the police station. We had been searching for him for the past five days but couldn't trace him," a relative said.As the body of Ahmad was brought to his home at Batamaloo, hundreds of people assembled and raised pro-freedom and anti-India slogans. They blamed the security forces for his death. "The morning he went missing, there was heavy presence of police and CRPF personnel in our area," said a protester, who did not want to be named. "We suspect they are behind his death."Ahmad used to run a dupatta shop in Srinagar and was to get married next month. The police said that they were investigating the case. "We have reports that his parents fixed his marriage but he was not interested. He had then run away. It may be a case of suicide but right now we can't say anything. We are investigating," said In charge Superintendent of Police for city south, Amit Kumar.Similar protests were seen in north Kashmir's Rafiabad, where angry villagers took to streets, accusing the police of killing an alleged Lashkar-e-Toiba operative in custody. Tariq Ahmad Dar, arrested on July 19, died under mysterious circumstances in police custody. The police said Dar committed suicide in the lock-up using the string of his trouser. The government has already ordered an inquiry by the Sub Divisional Magistrate, Sopore into the death and suspended three police officials for "dereliction" in duty.
