Heavy vehicles a constant nuisance in Panchkula, say commuters

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Even though thousands of daily commuters between Chandigarh and Panchkula continue to face harassment due to acute traffic snarls caused by unrestricted movement of trucks, the Panchkula police say they cannot do much to ameliorate the situation.Traffic jams on the road, especially near Kalagram and stretching up to the railway signal, have become a regular feature, especially during peak hours in the morning and evening. Most of the time, trucks coming towards Panchkula from Chandigarh lead to chaos. And if a heavy vehicle breaks down in the middle of the road, the entire stretch gets clogged for long hours, which forces commuters to take a detour from Manimajra. While heavy vehicles are not allowed to enter the city limits in Chandigarh from 6 am to 9 pm, the Panchkula police have neither fixed any timings nor planned any diversions.Superintendent of Police (Panchkula) Maneesh Choudhary said: "These trucks ply on the National Highway round the clock and enter Panchkula anytime. We cannot stop them as it is 'national' traffic. Also, if we prevent them from plying within the township, it would lead to traffic jam on the National Highway, which would be a bigger nuisance."Residents are a harried lot. "There is so much chaos in the morning because of these trucks. The police should fix timings for heavy vehicles to ply on the main road," said Ravinder Rawal, former president, municipal corporation.Shared Vishnu Goyal, chairman, Haryana Chamber of Commerce and Industries, said: "Inter-state trucks are a big headache as they jostle for space on the road during the morning and are also a traffic hazard. If the police are unable to fix timings for them, they can certainly work out a diversion."Residents also have a suggestion for the police to handle the problem. "The trucks can be parked behind Red Bishop or Suraj Cinema. The road remains vacant and it can be put to this use," said Rohit Singla, a resident of Sector 10.The UT Administration has responded positively to this suggestion. UT Home and Transport Secretary Ram Niwas said: "This is a good proposal. The traffic snarls on Panchkula-Chandigarh highway is a big menace, particularly during office hours. We will discuss it with the Traffic police and arrive at something concrete. Certain restrictions on movement of trucks during peak hours can be imposed."
