Srinagar, July 19 (PTI) Around ten houses and over two dozen shops were gutted a major fire in a market at Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, official sources said today. The fire broke out in a house at Chowkibal, 120 kms from here, last night and spread to adjoining houses and shops, they said. Fire services, army, police personnel and locals jointly carried out operation to douse the flames. The cause of the fire could not be ascertained immediately, they said. "More than 100 troops with fire fighting equipment were rushed to the area to fight the raging fire. Fire tenders were pressed in service as the Army and locals fought shoulder to shoulder in arresting the fire, which was brought under control by midnight," a defence spokesman said. Basic amenities like blankets, rations and water were provided to the affected while assistance was also provided to salvage household items from the rubble, he added.
