Mumbai, July 26 -- The city's parking problems will hopefully be alleviated with at least 50,000 parking slots slated to come up in the next two years. This has, however, got the Mumbai traffic police, which planned the multi-level parking project with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), worried about security. The traffic police are laying down stringent rules for the 17 sanctioned multi-storey parking lots coming up on private spaces in south and central Mumbai. "Security is our main concern because multi-storey parking lots are possible targets for cars filled with explosives or weapons," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Nandkumar Chougule said. The traffic police have recommended high-tech scanning machines for vehicles be installed at the new parking lots. The machine scans vehicles thoroughly and warns of any threats. It has also suggested that areas around the parking lots be declared 'no-parking zones'. Apart from scanners, the lots will also have closed circuit television cameras and 24-hour security. The BMC and traffic police have received at least 50 proposals from builders for parking lots. The amended Development Control rules grant builders extra floor space index, if they construct public parking lots on their premises and hand them over to the BMC. The traffic department received only three proposals in two years because of the realty slump. With the construction industry recovering, the number of proposals has increased. The Peddar Road parking lot, which is nearly complete, will be opened to public in a month. "Seven other parking lots are being considered for approval," said a senior municipal officer on condition of anonymity.
